Inside the watch

I assembled this watch while learning watch construction in the Netherlands. Its Seiko/TMI NH35 automatic movement winds through wrist motion or manually through the crown. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and includes a date display and stop-seconds for precise time setting.

The Powermatic 80 is a self-winding mechanical movement. Wrist motion turns an internal rotor to wind the mainspring, giving the watch up to 80 hours of power when fully wound. Its Nivachron balance spring also improves resistance to everyday magnetic fields.

Fossil’s Twist system combines quartz accuracy with visible mechanical motion. A replaceable battery powers the hour and minute hands, while movement of the wrist winds the exposed mechanical section that drives the seconds display. The remaining subdials show the day, date and 24-hour time.

This is a Japanese self-winding mechanical movement with three hands and a date display. As the watch moves on the wrist, an internal rotor turns and winds the mainspring, storing the energy that keeps the hands moving. It needs no battery for normal timekeeping and combines the character of a mechanical watch with practical everyday operation.

Seiko’s 4R35 is a self-winding mechanical movement with 23 jewels. Wrist movement turns an internal rotor, winding the mainspring; it can also be wound by hand through the crown. Fully wound, it runs for approximately 41 hours. A stop-seconds function pauses the seconds hand while setting the time, allowing a more precise adjustment.

The module combines regular timekeeping with world time, a 1/1000-second stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms and an LED light. It is powered by a CR1220 battery designed to last approximately three years.
